Love, Set, Taste...Cure! Governors Towne Club Hosts A Most Unique Breast Cancer Fundraiser, Sunday November 22nd, 1 - 4PM
The Tennis Center at Governors Towne Club (GTC) will be the site of this remarkable combination of events to raise money to fight breast cancer. But perhaps one of the most remarkable aspects about this fundraiser is that 100% of all proceeds raised will be donated to support the important work of the Susan G. Komen For The Cure, Atlanta Affiliate.
Several homeowners at GTC came together and enlisted the help of sponsors T2Tennis, La Parrilla Restaurant and NO Winery to host a Sunday afternoon of mixed doubles and wine tasting all for a great cause. Attendees can select the venue of high activity and colossal fun to play tennis organized by the professionals of T2Tennis. All prizes and event coordination for the "Tennis For the Cure" have been donated by T2Tennis, Atlanta's premier flexible tennis league.
Non-sporting types can participate and raise money to fight breast cancer through "Tasting for the Cure" by enjoying the afternoon tasting the various white wines of NO Winery and learning many interesting facts and subtleties of the various grape varietals and how they positively impact the wines.
At 2:00PM, Kenneth G. Horton, developer of Governors Towne Club will officially open the fundraiser. Congressman and Doctor Phil Gingery will be on hand to cut the ribbon to the Silent Auction. Over 50 valuable products and services have been contributed to the Silent Auction from individuals and companies in the Atlanta area. Attendees will be able to bid on items ranging from a package of horse riding lessons from Serenbe Stables, to Macintosh Computer Service and Support by 3 Alarm Fire, to a signed autographed racket donated by Melanie Oudin, the 17 year old tennis star from Marietta who became world famous in this year's US Open. Additionally, the Silent Auction will include items in all price ranges from gift certificates from The Shaving Gallery, La Parrilla Mexican Restaurants, and Abundance Luxury Limo to the use of an upscale vacation cottage in Destin, Fl, for a week's stay. Perhaps, one of the most unique donations that will be up for auction is "An Evening with Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood", including a private reception at Gallery 4463 and a dinner at The Old Mill. And finally, cheering on the event will be Atlanta's very own Falcon cheerleaders!
Everyone attending will receive a pink Susan G. Komen For The Cure "Goodie Bag" filled with various donated items. The gift bags will be handed out by two Mrs. Georgia titleholders who both just happen to be homeowners at Governors Towne Club. Mrs. Amanda Vogel, former Miss Georgia USA 1985-86 and Mrs. Georgia America 2005-2006, and the current reining Mrs. Georgia for 2009 - 2010, Mrs. Jennifer Everett.
The event's website can be found at http://www.tennisforthecure.com/.
A rain date has been set for Sunday, December 6th.
Please join us to for a fun day for a great cause!

Belk Spring Charity Sale Raises More Than $5 Million For Nonprofits
In return for a $5 donation to participating nonprofits, customers received a ticket admitting them to the Charity Sale, held on May 2, 2009, and entitling them to discounts ranging from 20 to 50 percent on merchandise throughout the store. Proceeds from tickets sold at the door were also donated and divided among participating charities.
“Belk welcomes the opportunity to support the good work of charitable and nonprofit organizations in the markets we serve,” said Tim Belk, chairman and CEO of Belk, Inc. “We want to thank everyone who participated in the Charity Sale, which resulted in donations of more than $5 million to benefit nonprofit organizations in their communities.”
The Blue Ridge Humane Society in Hendersonville, N.C., is one example of the many nonprofits that benefited from the Belk Charity Sale. During the sale, humane society volunteers manned an informational booth in the store and showcased one of their favorite pups, Keiko, a four-year-old Chihuahua in need of a home. Although he was not adopted that day, he found a home just one week later.
“We were excited to participate in Belk’s Charity Sale,” said Carolyn Paden, executive director of the Blue Ridge Humane Society. “We are always grateful for an opportunity to help homeless animals in our area and to help them find forever-homes.”
The Davenport School of the Arts (DSA) in Davenport, Fla., also participated in the sale. Students in the school’s drama department sold tickets to Belk’s Charity Sale on the night of one of their theatrical productions in an effort to raise funds for their program.
“We appreciate Belk reaching out to us,” said Robert Moszenburg, a drama teacher at DSA. “We look forward to participating in the next Charity Sale event.”

Right to Hike Honors Life of Meredith Emerson
To celebrate Meredith Emerson's life and passions, friends, co-workers and concerned Georgians have joined together to create Right to Hike, a nonprofit that promotes not only hiking safety, but also other causes that were dear to the young woman.
Right to Hike will kick off its programs by hosting simultaneous fundraisers at all 40 metro Atlanta Applebee's on June 25 — five days after Emerson's birthday - where participants dine any time during the restaurant's business hours to donate 15 percent of their total bill to the nonprofit.
The money raised will go toward funding Right to Hike's three initiatives:
To provide hikers and outposts with GPS devices that allow emergency personnel to locate hikers in distress;
To offer added security to people with pets by providing micro-chipping for domesticated animals at Right to Hike events:
To help other students study abroad in France, as Emerson did, through The Meredith Hope Emerson Memorial Award for Study Abroad which was created by The University of Georgia.
"We want to ensure other hikers can feel safe while doing what they love by giving them access to Satellite Personal Outdoor Trackers, known as SPOTs, so they can send messages for help and be located if lost," says Julia Karrenbauer, Emerson's co-worker, best friend and board member for Right to Hike. "Meredith's dog Ella's micro-chip played a key role in helping us find her, and it's so important to make sure all pets have one in the event they're ever lost."
To participate in the fundraiser, visit www.righttohikeinc.com and print out your invitation before visiting Applebee's to ensure 15 percent of your bill goes toward helping Right to Hike.

Silver for Santa Makes Holidays Brighter for J.C. Booth Families
About 10 years ago the school started a fundraiser to help their own families who were struggling financially have a more memorable holiday. It has operated under several different names throughout the years but is now called Silver for Santa, with the word “silver” representing the spirit of giving.
Students are asked to consider donating whatever amount they feel is appropriate. The money collected is used to pay for practical items like rent, eyeglasses or doctor visits for students.
“And sometimes we just buy a bicycle because it’s what needs to be done,” says school guidance counselor Lynda Manwaring.
Manwaring did not disclose the goal for the fundraiser, saying that a goal was set only to have a ceiling, but the project raised more money than ever topping out at over $6,600.
“This has been the most successful endeavor we have ever undertaken but the definitive monetary amount is really irrelevant. It is the loving, generous spirit of our students and families that makes this project special,” says Manwaring.
While students throughout the school have stepped up to help their own, one class in particular has been leading the way. Dave Edinger’s eighth grade homeroom collected over $1,000, the most of any classroom at the school. Although Manwaring admits that Edinger has been a motivating force, she says it is the students who answered the call and stepped outside of themselves to help others.
“Our students are so very generous with what they have been given and they often put others first. Our youth are truly wonderful, young adults,” she says.
Silver for Santa came about because the school saw a need for families who were struggling to pay bills and send their children to school, leaving little money left for anything else.
“Our desire is, and continues to be, to celebrate the spirit of the season by making memories better for others,” Manwaring says.
The fundraiser takes place over a 10-day period.
