Cousins Properties and its five metro Atlanta Avenue® lifestyle centers are collaborating with high school marketing students to bring holiday cheer with WALK OFF for a Cause, a fashion show benefiting United Way. The event, which is invitation only, will be hosted at Terminus in Buckhead on December 9 from 6:30 – 8 p.m.
The fashion show will engage DECA students at one high school in each Avenue community, including Grayson, Kennesaw Mountain, Lassiter, South Forsyth and Whitewater. The students will model holiday trends by Avenue retailers Banana Republic, Jos. A. Bank, Gap, Sage, Talbots and White House | Black Market, that also will be offering special promotions to Avenue shoppers leading up to the event.
Students have been working with The Avenue’s marketing managers to develop a campaign that will promote their particular holiday fashion style within each local community. A scholarship will be awarded to one student from each of the five participating schools. The Favorite Model, the student who receives the most overall votes at www.avenuewalkoff.com between December 1 and December 8, will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The student that receives the top number of votes at each of the remaining four schools will receive a $250 scholarship. Lastly, United Way of Metro Atlanta will be presented with a $2,500 donation from The Avenue and Terminus. All winners will be announced live at WALK OFF for a Cause.
“It's rare that we get to provide students with the opportunity to apply their classroom concepts to the ‘real’ business world,” said Krystin Glover, Georgia DECA Board President and Teacher of the Year recipient at Whitewater High School in Fayetteville, Ga. “Partnerships with The Avenue such as the STYLE upGRADE and the upcoming WALK OFF for a Cause have allowed our students to showcase their marketing and promotional talents.”
WALK OFF for a Cause is a component of Cousins Properties’ ongoing Partners in Education initiative and supports the company’s involvement with United Way since 2006.
“The Avenue is committed to giving back through educational initiatives, and with each year of our K-12 partnership we’re increasingly impressed by the marketing students’ unique ideas,” said Kim Tanalgo-Minshew – marketing manager, The Avenue. “WALK OFF for a Cause will demonstrate the skills and capabilities of our community’s youth while raising money for a nonprofit that in turns helps so many charities.”

UPS Once Again Leads Nation in United Way Donations
(BUSINESS WIRE)--For the ninth consecutive year, UPS (NYSE:UPS) and its employees have led the nation in supporting the annual United Way campaign.
With more than 249,000 individuals participating, UPS employees and retirees pledged more than $53 million to United Way during this year’s campaign, more than any other participating company. UPS’s matching contribution, to be determined early next year by The UPS Foundation, is expected to push UPS’s total donation for 2008 over $60 million.
Last year, UPS’s total contribution to United Way after calculating the company’s match totaled $60.8 million. Since 1982, including this year’s pledges, UPS and its employees have donated an astonishing $924 million.
“Year after year, UPS continues to raise the bar in terms of generosity and an unwavering commitment to community,” said Brian Gallagher, president and CEO of United Way of America. “At a time when the need around the world, and at home, has never been more compelling, UPS and its employees responded and are changing lives. We couldn’t be more proud of our partnership with UPS and of the opportunities we’re creating together for a better life and brighter future for everyone.”
In addition to financial contributions, UPS employees and their families also volunteered their time and talents to their communities, donating more than 900,000 hours of time through Global Volunteer Month and UPS’s Neighbor-to-Neighbor program. The latter is a company-wide volunteer initiative that matches employees and their families with volunteer opportunities based on their interests, skills and availability. UPS also donates loaned executives to several local United Way affiliates across the country.
“Even in this tough economy, the spirit of giving is alive and well at UPS,” said Scott Davis, the company’s chairman and CEO. “The support of our employees is unwavering because we all recognize that the United Way’s efforts to improve lives and communities are more important than ever.”

Senior Citizen Voucher Program Also Provides Alternative Transportation Services for Developmentally Disabled
ExceptionalOPS, an advocacy group for the developmentally disabled and Fayette Senior Services, a non-profit organization that provides a broad scope of life-enhancing services to Fayette County’s senior population, collaborated in 2007 to launch the first Fayette County Alternative Transportation Initiative. Today, the program continues to successfully provide a solution to the transportation challenges their respective audiences face.
Through a grant awarded to ExceptionalOPS by The United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, the two agencies joined forces and developed a program that expanded the services of Fayette Senior Services’ existing senior voucher program to include Fayette County residents between the ages of 18 to 59 with developmental disabilities or adults whom, through no fault of their own, do not have the ability to drive. The pilot program was met with much success and it continues to address a specific transportation need in the community.
Without public transportation available in Fayette County, the independence of individuals who cannot drive is severely limited. Through the transportation voucher program, participants can purchase vouchers for a nominal fee though Fayette Senior Services and arrange their own transportation and negotiate the payment for service with one of the program’s many registered drivers.
Vouchers for people with developmental disabilities are still widely available; however, an increased demand for low-cost transportation service for senior citizens has resulted in limited availability for eligible participants age 60 and better. Program administrators are optimistic that future funding will become available that will enable the agency to meet the increasing demand for service.
Individuals interested in participating in the program as passengers or as drivers should contact Fayette Senior Services Case Manger, Marie Doyle at 770-461-0813 or mdoyle@fayss.org. Fayette Senior Services is located at 4 Center Drive in Fayetteville. For more information about the agency visit www.fayss.org.
People with developmental disabilities who require assistance in obtaining day support services, information about Medicaid waiver funding or any other related questions should visit www.exceptionalops.com or contact ExceptionalOPS Executive Director, Janet Smola, at 770-631-1035 or janetsmola@numail.org.
