Verizon Wireless encourages students and their parents to donate their no-longer-used cell phones and accessories to HopeLine®, the company's cell phone recycling and refurbishing program, to benefit victims of domestic violence.
HopeLine collects no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories in any condition from any wireless service provider. The phones are then refurbished or recycled in an environmentally sound way. Refurbished phones - complete with 3,000 minutes of wireless service - are provided to local domestic violence organizations or local government and law enforcement agencies for use with their domestic violence clients.
As part of the refurbishing and recycling processes, HopeLine's recycling vendor removes all customer information from donated phones, including contacts, text messages, games and apps, and images, prior to distributing the cell phones for reuse.
Donating a no-longer-used wireless phone to HopeLine is an easy way for students to help victims of domestic violence and support domestic violence awareness organizations. Students, graduates and family members can donate their wireless phones and accessories at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store across the country. For students who can't make it to a store, phones and accessories can also be sent by mail with the postage-paid label. Students, faculty members and parents planning activities and events for their schools, colleges or universities should also consider organizing a HopeLine phone drive.
Since the October 2001 launch of the HopeLine cell phone recycling program, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 7 million phones, distributed more than 90,000 phones with free wireless service to victims of domestic violence, and awarded cash grants of more than $7.9 million to organizations working to prevent domestic violence. HopeLine has properly disposed of nearly 1.6 million no-longer-used wireless phones in an environmentally sound way and kept more than 200 tons of electronic waste and batteries out of landfills.

Verizon Employees in Georgia Donate $5,662 Worth of School Supplies to Assist Area Schools
/PRNewswire/ -- Verizon employees at employee work locations across Georgia collected $5,662 worth of school supplies to donate to Woodland Elementary School in Atlanta and Mimosa Elementary School in Roswell, Ga., during a recent Tools for School drive.
More than 500 Verizon locations throughout the country took part in the three-week campaign to collect new pens and pencils, rulers, crayons, backpacks and other items children need to start the school year. In all, employees donated more than $500,000 worth of supplies to more than 400 schools and nonprofits across the U.S., with a specific focus on schools with a large population of students from low-income families. NOBLE's Georgia Chapter Collects Hundreds of Phones and Receives HopeLine Law Enforcement Partnership Award From Verizon Wireless
/PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless, a corporate leader in domestic violence awareness, presented the Georgia Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) with a HopeLine Law Enforcement Partnership Award yesterday at NOBLE's annual conference in Virginia. The HopeLine award honors the efforts of public safety officials who are committed to reducing domestic violence, providing support to victims, raising awareness of the issue and educating communities about domestic violence.
The Georgia Chapter was recognized for its participation in a nationwide phone collection drive organized by NOBLE. Thanks to the generosity of NOBLE members, law enforcement agencies across the state of Georgia and the general public, the Georgia Chapter collected several hundred no-longer-used wireless phones.
In honor of the Georgia Chapter's efforts, Verizon Wireless will donate $2,500 to the Savannah Area Family Emergency (S.A.F.E.) Shelter. S.A.F.E. Shelter provides temporary shelter and services to abused women and their children and supports prevention education, increased public awareness and legislation designed to decrease domestic violence.

Georgia Nonprofit Groups Received More Than $600,000 in 2007 From the Verizon Foundation to Support Education, Domestic Violence and Internet Safety
Verizon Employees Volunteered 4,150 Hours to State's Nonprofits

In 2007, the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, provided $609,782 in grants to 205 nonprofit groups in Georgia through competitive grants and through the Verizon Volunteers program, which rewards employees with matching gifts and grants to nonprofits that employees donate to and support. In 2007, Verizon employees volunteered 4,150 hours to nonprofit groups across the state.

for an innovative program for students, focusing on engineering,
bioscience and emerging technologies.
-- Medical College of Georgia Research Institute Inc., Augusta -- $50,000

to transmit electrocardiograms and meet the challenge of providing
