Atlanta Leaders Come Together To Launch Prostate Cancer Pledge Campaign

/PRNewswire/ -- Prostate cancer is a serious health concern in Georgia. According to the American Cancer Society, the state of Georgia ranks 11th in number of estimated deaths per capita from the disease. In an effort to raise awareness about prostate cancer and ensure more men commit to be informed and screened, several companies and media organizations have joined the Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition in launching a pledge campaign.

The Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition, RC Cancer Centers and the Georgia Department of Community Health along with the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Thrashers, UPS, CR Bard, WXIA Television, Morehouse School of Medicine, KISS 104.1 Radio and WSB Radio are supporting this initiative to increase prostate cancer awareness throughout the state of Georgia.

"Specifically, we are encouraging every man who is over the age of 40 in Georgia to speak to his doctor and take the pledge to get screened for prostate cancer," said Frank Catroneo, Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition Board Member. "Our goal is to have 10,000 men in Georgia pledge to have the conversation with their doctors and/or be screened between now and April 20, 2011."

M. Rony Francois, MD, MSPH, PhD, Director, DCH Division of Public Health and State Health Officer said, "I look forward to the potential that this pledge campaign holds in increasing the number of men who talk to their doctor about prostate cancer screening."

To encourage prostate cancer discussions and screenings, the Atlanta Hawks and the Georgia Prostate Cancer Pledge committee will provide two tickets to several Atlanta Hawks home games, starting with the December 7 th home game versus the New Jersey Nets, to the first 2,000 men who commit to being screened for the first time. Men can visit www.hawks.com or www.GeorgiaProstateCancerPledge.com to make their screening pledge and redeem their complimentary tickets online.

There will be a number of activities and events to help educate men and their loved ones, and to bring awareness to the serious health impact of prostate cancer for all concerned. The events will culminate in April with a prostate cancer symposium, a golf tournament, a motorcycle ride, video testimonials of survivors and much more.

Michael Holton, president and COO of RC Cancer Centers, which specializes in the ProstRcision treatment for prostate cancer said, "Throughout the campaign, we will be offering free of charge PSA screenings for men over 40 years old, who have not been diagnosed with prostate cancer or previously treated for this disease. They can be screened at any one of our five locations in Georgia. For screening locations, visit www.RCCancerCenters.com."

Current data available from Georgia Department of Community Health, the Centers for Disease Control and the American Cancer Society show:

* Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer among Georgia males and accounts for 28 percent of all new cancer cases among males each year.
* Nationally, about one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime and more than two million men in the United States have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point and are still alive today.
* Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men and the second leading cause of cancer death, behind lung cancer.

"It is crucial for men to maintain an ongoing relationship with their healthcare provider as the risk for prostate cancer will vary from person to person," said Roland Matthews, M.D., from Morehouse School of Medicine and Director of Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence at Grady Health System.

A prostate screening PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is a simple blood test which will not define a man's prostate cancer status, but provides the basis for men to start the right conversations with their doctor. When prostate cancer is detected early, it is a very curable disease.

Celebrity Artists and Musicians Take the American Cancer Society's Campaign for More Birthdays to the Next Level

/PRNewswire/ -- The American Cancer Society, the official sponsor of birthdays, today announced details of a unique new campaign that marks the next phase of the Society's movement for More Birthdays. Over the past several months, dozens of the biggest names in music and art have come together, inspired by the efforts of the American Cancer Society, its supporters and everyone affected by cancer, to generously donate their talent and artwork to help amplify the voice of the More Birthdays movement. To date, artists such as Keith Urban, Justin Bieber, Jack Johnson, Colbie Caillat, Eric Carle, Maroon 5, Masha D'Yans and more have joined the More Birthdays movement, and others continue to join every day.

Musicians joining the campaign each perform their own special rendition of "Happy Birthday," one of the most well-known songs in the world, while each visual artist creates or donates artwork inspired by specific facts about how the American Cancer Society has contributed to progress against cancer. The musician and artist contributions have been turned into traditional advertising elements such as television, magazine and online ads, as well as birthday merchandise housed in a new art and music gallery on morebirthdays.com. There the public can help celebrate More Birthdays by sending custom e-cards or buying gift wrap, posters, limited-edition prints and more - all created from the exclusive art and music donated to the campaign. Each donation made or item purchased will help the American Cancer Society raise money and save more lives to create a world with less cancer and More Birthdays.

"I love the spirit of the American Cancer Society's More Birthdays campaign because it celebrates life," said three-time Grammy Award winner Keith Urban. "The marking of time, especially when spent with family and friends on that special day, helps to remind us of the little things that are most important to all of our lives."

"I think it's really important to support More Birthdays because the Society is helping out so much to save lives," said multiple platinum singing sensation Justin Bieber. "Hopefully, me singing Happy Birthday to people through this effort will make them smile."

"Thanks in part to the progress we've made, today we are celebrating 350 birthdays each and every day that would have been otherwise lost to cancer," said John R. Seffrin, PhD, chief executive officer, American Cancer Society. "Now we are working relentlessly toward a world where we can celebrate tens of thousands More Birthdays every day, and we need every tool at our disposal. We hope the support of these wonderful artists and musicians will capture the public's attention and inspire them to help us make more progress and move us closer to a world where cancer never steals another year of anyone's life."

The campaign is the creative work of the Society's partner advertising and public relations agencies, led by The Martin Agency with strategic support from Brodeur Partners and Vanguard Entertainment Media Marketing Group.

The American Cancer Society invites everyone to visit morebirthdays.com and join these entertainers, artists and the thousands of supporters who have already joined the movement to create a world with less cancer and More Birthdays.

Aflac Announces Support for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

/PRNewswire/ -- Aflac today announced its support for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by kicking off a new integrated fundraising campaign to benefit the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Childhood cancer is the number one cause of death by disease for children under the age of 15. Through improved research and treatments, childhood cancer survival rates have improved from less than 20% in the 1980's to over 80% today. Aflac makes pediatric cancer its primary philanthropic cause.

The campaign includes a new component enabling people to donate to the Aflac Cancer Center (ACC) through the Aflac Cancer Center causes page which can be accessed on Facebook.com or at www.aflac.com/aflaccancercenter. Aflac will contribute one dollar for anyone who joins the ACC causes page and will match donations up to $1 million.

To kick off the campaign Aflac Chairman and CEO Dan Amos today announced that he will make a personal donation of $100,000 and challenged others to contribute to the fight against childhood cancer.

"The heroic doctors and nurses at the Aflac Cancer Center work hard to improve the lives of children while delivering much-needed hope to families," Amos said. "That's why Aflac, our sales agents and our employees continue to embrace this great cause. We are proud to match donations and encourage everyone to show their support for children and families dealing with cancer."

The month-long campaign also includes a text to donate program which opens on September 1, and targets NASCAR fans. It will be highlighted on September 6th as NASCAR star Carl Edwards drives his No. 99 Aflac Ford Fusion at the nationally televised race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The car's paint scheme, designed by a 13-year-old patient at the Aflac Cancer Center, signifies a special tribute to the Aflac Cancer Center and all children fighting childhood cancer. The company will sustain the fundraising drive throughout the month of September.

"Cancer is the leading medical cause of death in children, and saving such lives leads to more total years saved than for any adult cancer except breast cancer," Dr. William G. Woods, director of the Aflac Cancer Center said. "We have a unique ability to make an investment in children's lives and longevity and we thank Aflac and Carl Edwards for helping us achieve our goals."

Each year the Aflac Cancer Center treats more than 350 new cancer patients. It also provides the largest sickle cell disease program in America, with 1,635 active cases and has cured more children of sickle cell disease than any treatment center in the nation. In addition to funding research and treatment, Aflac contributions serve other critical needs, including new facilities, a new state-of-the-art pediatric research building, and endowments for the Family Support Team and Fellowship Program. In August, the Aflac Cancer Center announced that Aflac had surpassed $50 million in donations to this cause.

Components of the plan for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month include the following:

-- Causes Page (Facebook)

Aflac will donate $1 for anyone who joins the Aflac Cancer Center causes page, an application on Facebook. The company will also match donations up to $1 million and Aflac CEO Dan Amos will initiate donations with a personal contribution of $100,000.

-- Color Carl's Car Contest

Patients at the Aflac Cancer Center were asked to color Carl Edwards' car for the nationally televised race on September 6, at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Carl and the car's designer, Jody Lawrence, a 13-year-old cancer patient, will unveil the car on Friday, September 4, at the Aflac Cancer Center.

-- Text to Donate Program

Throughout September, NASCAR fans are encouraged to text the phrase "GOCARL" to 90999 to make a $5 donation to the Aflac Cancer Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. All donations will appear on the contributor's next cellular phone bill.

-- Sale of Die Cast Replica Cars

Motorsports Authentics will donate 5 percent of proceeds from the sale of the No. 99 Aflac Ford Fusion die cast to the Aflac Cancer Center.

Text Messaging Campaign to Benefit Hungry Kids

/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Operation No Kid Hungry, a campaign to raise funds to help end childhood hunger and encourage Americans to hold food drives, begins today. Between now and March 1, subscribers of all major wireless carriers can donate $5 to Share Our Strength by text messaging "SHARE" to 20222. AT&T will match donations up to $100,000. Share Our Strength is the leading national organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger in America.

"We've seen a dramatic jump in the need for food assistance in the last six months," said Bill Shore, founder and executive director of Share Our Strength. "Some food pantries we fund had a 40- to 50-percent increase in demand -- much of it from working families and people seeking help for the first time."

President-elect Obama pledged to end childhood hunger by 2015 during his presidential campaign. He has also called for a national day of service on January 19, Martin Luther King Day. In response, Share Our Strength is asking people to send a text donation and hold food drives to help feed those in need. Food pantries and food banks especially need foods rich in protein, such as peanut butter and canned tuna, chicken, and salmon. Visit http://www.strength.org/ to find a food bank and a list of the most-needed nutritious foods.

AT&T, Share Our Strength's partner in this program, will launch a nationwide employee food drive in 32 cities. The AT&T food drive kicks off today in six cities -- Atlanta; Chicago; Dallas; Hartford, Conn.; Sacramento, Calif.; and Washington, D.C. The remaining 26 cities will launch their food drives on January 19.

"As a proud participating sponsor of this Share Our Strength program, we are pleased to offer AT&T's expansive resources -- our vast network of wireless subscribers, 300,000 employees and dedicated AT&T Pioneer volunteers -- as part of a greater effort toward eliminating childhood hunger," said Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive officer of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. "Every text counts."

All funds raised will support Share Our Strength's national work to end childhood hunger, which finds ways to feed the hungry in our communities, funds the most effective anti-hunger organizations in each state, and makes the most of state, federal, and local resources. In the United States, more than 12 million children are at risk of hunger. This national text-donation campaign is made possible through the Mobile Giving Foundation.

UPS Once Again Leads Nation in United Way Donations

(BUSINESS WIRE)--For the ninth consecutive year, UPS (NYSE:UPS) and its employees have led the nation in supporting the annual United Way campaign.

With more than 249,000 individuals participating, UPS employees and retirees pledged more than $53 million to United Way during this year’s campaign, more than any other participating company. UPS’s matching contribution, to be determined early next year by The UPS Foundation, is expected to push UPS’s total donation for 2008 over $60 million.

Last year, UPS’s total contribution to United Way after calculating the company’s match totaled $60.8 million. Since 1982, including this year’s pledges, UPS and its employees have donated an astonishing $924 million.

“Year after year, UPS continues to raise the bar in terms of generosity and an unwavering commitment to community,” said Brian Gallagher, president and CEO of United Way of America. “At a time when the need around the world, and at home, has never been more compelling, UPS and its employees responded and are changing lives. We couldn’t be more proud of our partnership with UPS and of the opportunities we’re creating together for a better life and brighter future for everyone.”

In addition to financial contributions, UPS employees and their families also volunteered their time and talents to their communities, donating more than 900,000 hours of time through Global Volunteer Month and UPS’s Neighbor-to-Neighbor program. The latter is a company-wide volunteer initiative that matches employees and their families with volunteer opportunities based on their interests, skills and availability. UPS also donates loaned executives to several local United Way affiliates across the country.

“Even in this tough economy, the spirit of giving is alive and well at UPS,” said Scott Davis, the company’s chairman and CEO. “The support of our employees is unwavering because we all recognize that the United Way’s efforts to improve lives and communities are more important than ever.”
