Bert's Big Adventure

There are so many people with HUGE hearts! Keeping up with this column humbles me as I post articles and news from the many helping hands here in Georgia.

There is nothing tougher in this world than watching as your child suffers through any kind of illness. Unless you've experienced it yourself, it's impossible to imagine the how heart rending it is to be the parent, sibling or grandparent of a little one suffering from a chronic or terminal illness. Not only is it a heart-breaker, but the stress of dealing with other children, family members, work, normal household tasks and other stresses can be overwhelming. Often times the additional cost of medical care piles on a financial burden that can have the family bread winners wishing for the days when they simply had to pinch pennies. The need for a smile-break increases exponentially. That's where Bert's Big Adventure steps in to help!

I was introduced to Bert's Big Adventure by Domino's Pizza! Bert's is a 501(c)(3) group that sends kids with chronic or terminal diseases, along with their family, to Disney World for a fun-filled weekend. (I've added some info from the group's website below so I won't go into more details here.)

Domino's is donating a dollar to the non-profit any time someone orders a large 3-topping pizza at $10.99 (promo code "BERT" online, coupon code "5806) now through April 6th. Q100's The Bert Show will be promoting the purchase of the $10.99 pizza. Those who purchase a pizza can donate additional amounts if they'd like. All the money goes directly to the foundation. You don't have to order online, you can also order via phone.

I know my family is going to be eating a bit more pizza than normal through the end of the promotion simply 'cause we'll be able eat well and do a tiny bit of good, too. It's a win-win.

There will be a link at http://www.allthehitsq100.com/, plus you can also go to http://www.dominos.com/ to order. All of the metro Atlanta stores are participating, so we encourage you to order often and be sure to add a few extra dollars to help this great local group!

From the Bert's Big Adventure website:

Bert's Big Adventure is a special trip designed to provide families a magical weekend at Walt Disney World. These families have children, aged 5 to 12, who are experiencing a chronic or terminal illness, live in the Bert Show listening area and have a proven financial need.
This trip is much more than the experience of hugs from Mickey, awe-inspiring shows or the honor of being Grand Marshals in the Magic Kingdom Main Street Parade. It is the opportunity to provide these families the gift of time together; a chance to escape hospitals, protocols, intense scheduling and difficult daily challenges. At its very core, Bert's Big Adventure offers these families time to create a legacy of memories in "The Happiest Place on Earth."

Mission:

Bert's Big Adventure is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization designed to allow children with a chronic or terminal illness ages 5 to 12 years of age that prove financial need and live in The Bert Show radio listening area to experience a magical weekend with their families at Walt Disney World as our guests. Each year, Bert's Big Adventure will take these children to Walt Disney World with their parents and siblings. Because of their special needs and financial strain, this is an experience that many of these children and families would not be able to know without the help of Bert's Big Adventure. Our vision is to charter a flight with these children, their families, and a medical staff to Walt Disney World. Upon arrival in Florida, Bert's Big Adventure will provide hotel accommodations, Walt Disney World park passes, transportation to and from the park and meal coupons to our guests.
